California is using a voluntary smartphone tool that will help track coronavirus cases across the state - and let you know if you've come in contact with one. If someone using the tool tests positive for coronavirus, it can notify anyone whose phone came within six feet of that person for more than 15 minutes over the previous 14 days.
The app does not track names or location data, just proximity to other phones using the tool.
Up to 40 million Californians can opt into the tool starting Thursday. Gov. Gavin Newsom says the more people who participate, the more effective it will be.
